Learning Coach
The Role of the Learning Coach
Student Success Starts with Family Support
One of the most important factors in a student's success at Leon County Virtual School (LCVS) is the involvement of a dedicated Learning Coach. While full-time virtual school offers greater flexibility than a traditional classroom, students still need structure, accountability, encouragement, and daily support to stay on track.
Every full-time LCVS student must have a designated Learning Coach, typically a parent/guardian or trusted adult, who takes an active role in supporting their education. The Learning Coach helps establish a consistent learning schedule, monitor academic progress, communicate with teachers, and ensure assignments and assessments are completed on time.
The level of support will vary depending on the student's age, maturity, independence, and individual learning needs.
Middle School Students (Grades 6–8)
Middle school students are developing the independence and organizational skills needed for successful virtual learning. Their Learning Coach should be available throughout the school day to provide guidance, monitor progress, and help students stay focused.
Learning Coaches should be in the same general location as their student during the school day, although constant supervision may not be necessary for every student. Regular check-ins, assistance with time management, and encouragement to communicate with teachers are essential.
High School Students (Grades 9–12)
High school students are expected to take greater responsibility for managing their coursework, communicating with teachers, and meeting deadlines. However, independence does not mean students should be left to manage their education entirely on their own.
Learning Coaches must remain actively involved by reviewing course progress, monitoring grades, ensuring assignments are completed, and helping students maintain a consistent learning schedule. Students should have a safe, supportive learning environment and access to adult assistance when needed.
Learning Coach Responsibilities
Learning Coaches are expected to:
-
Establish and support a consistent daily learning schedule.
-
Monitor course grades, assignment completion, and weekly progress.
-
Help students develop organization, time management, and independent learning skills.
-
Encourage students to communicate regularly with their teachers and attend required Discussion-Based Assessments (DBAs).
-
Participate in required parent/guardian communication, conferences, and progress meetings.
-
Ensure students have a safe, appropriate learning environment with reliable access to technology.
-
Arrange transportation for required on-campus orientation, state and district testing, remediation activities, and other required school events.
-
Work collaboratively with LCVS teachers and staff when additional academic support or intervention is needed.
A Partnership for Student Success
At LCVS, we believe successful virtual learning is a partnership between the student, family, and school. Our certified teachers provide instruction, feedback, and academic support, while Learning Coaches help students build the daily habits and accountability necessary for success.
Students do not need to begin virtual school with perfect organizational or time-management skills. However, families must be willing to provide the consistent support, supervision, and encouragement needed to help those skills develop.
Before applying for full-time enrollment, families should carefully consider who will serve as their student's Learning Coach and how that person will be available to support the student each school day.
